The media headlines all but scream obscenity that Zsa Zsa Gabor—a celebrity nonagenarian, quite literally on her last leg—wants to be a mom at 94.
CNN’s story quoted Gabor’s husband of 25 years, Prince Frederic von Anhalt (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric_Prinz_von_Anhalt) (re-titled by some on the blogosphere as “Prince von Ahole” (http://www NULL.tmz NULL.com/2011/04/18/prince-frederic-von-ahole-zsa-zsa-gabor-baby-pregnant-surrogate-process/)) as saying he’d “have nothing to live for” (http://articles NULL.cnn NULL.com/2011-04-14/entertainment/gabor NULL.baby_1_prince-frederic-von-anhalt-zsa-zsa-gabor-francesca-hilton?_s=PM:SHOWBIZ) when the ailing actress passed on.
So how about purchasing a puppy? It’s sensible and costs less.
Oh, forgot. That would take some forethought.
By casually strolling out to drop off his septuagenarian seed for a donor egg and gestational surrogate match, he may have inadvertently invented the first drive-through fertility clinic.
He’s quoted as saying he’d like his 94-year-old wife “to hear the baby screaming” (http://www NULL.abc NULL.net NULL.au/news/stories/2011/04/15/3192669 NULL.htm?section=entertainment) before she dies.
It’s more than likely the baby isn’t the only one the ailing Zsa Zsa will hear screaming before this story is done.
It’s a prospect some have described as “nauseating”—just like you’d feel after too much chocolate.
And, just like ingesting an excess of chocolate, the Gabor story is not about Zsa Zsa as much as it’s about too much of a good thing.
But scratch those headlines and you’ll soon see all that glitters is not necessarily the reality of the situation.
Anyone that remembers Ms. Gabor from her TV appearances originating from the 1950’s knows that Zsa Zsa was all about the k-zam and the k-pow of shocking her public with the affectionate ooze of her dramatic charm.
Later on personalities like Charo (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Charo) would emerge to mop up and parody the Gabor style to even greater excess.
However, aside from multiple marriages, people have yet to find cause to stand up and charge Gabor with moral bankruptcy. (Even if she was charged with clocking a cop (http://www NULL.people NULL.com/people/archive/article/0,,20121158,00 NULL.html) back in 1989.)
So, why now, at the grand finale of decades of performance on the public stage would she risk making a fool of herself?
The answer is simple. It’s not about Zsa Zsa Gabor. It’s all about Prince Frederic von Anhalt and a hankering after the ridiculous.
Chocolate, after all, only makes people sick when it’s fed from the wrong hand—the one that doesn’t know where to stop or where common sense ends and perversity begins.
It is for this very same reason that Octomom (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Nadya_Suleman) attracted death threats, violence and public revulsion.
Like Aristotle’s Golden Mean, we must find rationality and balance in our actions.
The Zsa Zsa Mama story isn’t about maternal age. It isn’t about assisted reproductive technologies.
It’s about how they can be perverted when embraced without a conscience.
