Anges de Lumiere with son Nicholas

According to Anges de Lumiere—a former international corporate lawyer from Paris, FR—motherhood after 40 doesn’t mean you have to lose the ‘battle of the bulge’ against an army of postpartum or perimenopausal hormones.

(Count me in—I’m in the front trenches of the midlife-mom gym, sucking spinach rations, and fighting off a hail of fat-flak!)

What’s more, de Lumiere—now pregnant and expecting to give birth in April 2011 at age 45—feels she’s discovered the secret to being slim after having children in your 40’s or 50’s.

With her new book, The Journey of The Slim Soul (http://www NULL.journeyoftheslimsoul NULL.com/), de Lumiere intends to free midlife women and mothers from the illusion that having kids after 40, as well as aging, means getting fat.

“I wrote it to inspire women to love themselves more and to combat the damage of the dieting industry.”

“It is not inevitable to grow bigger when we age,” she argues. “The reason we put on weight is emotional—we tend to accumulate what I call ‘pounds of pain.’”

“I managed to ‘lose’ 24 lbs with only half a thyroid—so often the reasons we believe we are overweight can be false beliefs,” she says.

De Lumiere has a track record of having walked the talk. At 36, she left her lucrative career and first marriage—which felt like a “golden cage”—and moved to England to start a second family, giving birth to a son at 40.

She then re-trained as a clinical hypnotherapist, EFT practitioner, writer and speaker, to follow her dream of working with women and children.

Now a mother of a blended family—with 2 grown children from her first marriage and 3 from her partner’s first marriage—it’s clear de Lumiere likes to break with ‘conventional wisdom’ in child birth as well as slimming.

“I want to go further than ‘pain management’ during my child birth experience,” she says of her current pregnancy.

“I aim for orgasmic birth—it is possible and available to every woman, not just those who live in farms and don’t shave their armpits or wear lipstick every day.”

With the same avant garde approach to slimming, she says: “The process of being overweight can totally be reversed.”

“Mothers more than anyone else tend to put on weight because along their journeys as nurturers, they forget to nourish themselves and make sure that their needs are met.”

The consequences, she says, are that mothers end up feeling depleted and use food to fill the void. The secret to slimming, therefore, is all about self-care.

De Lumiere says that we need to get to the root of emotional issues contributing to the weight gain instead of just trying to control the effects.

“Once you are in the right frame of mind and have resolved your issues, the pounds just melt away easily and effortlessly.”

“If you try to do it before you are ready, however, or without addressing the real issues behind the weight, you are fighting an uphill struggle,” she continues.

And, having had a child after 40 with another on the way, Anges de Lumiere believes that later life mothers may actually be in a good place to find the right balance between parenting and slimming.

“I think, generally, older parents are more compassionate, confident and calmer.”

De Lumiere says she is more fit now than she was during her earlier pregnancies, having taken up running and becoming a vegetarian since then.

“I think I am in as good shape as I was when I was 30—if not better. I find that most of my friends who’ve had babies in their 40’s have much healthier lifestyles than their counterparts.”

And it’s no surprise—this soon-to-be-mom at 45 has been on the journey of the slim soul.
