Watching re-runs of the TV series Medium, little did I realize I was tuning into my past life in a new way.

Like diving through an unexpected wormhole, I was back in the early 70’s with The Rolling Stones, President Jimmy Carter, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wayward wife, Margaret.

What does a post-millennial TV show have to do with the Stones? Actor Jake Weber (http://www NULL.tvguide NULL.com/celebrities/jake-weber/bio/155253), who was born in 1964—which, incidentally, makes him the same age as my kid brother—plays “Joe,” the long suffering husband of a psychic.

In various interviews (http://www NULL.dailymail NULL.co NULL.uk/femail/article-1280505/Keith-hid-cocaine-shirt--wedding-gift-Mick-The-truth-Rolling-Stones-year-old-boy NULL.html), Weber claims to have couriered drugs at the tender age of 8 to the South of France for the rock band of the ages.

I peer at my son Alex—currently the very same age, pink and leggy from his latest growth spurt—and shake my head like a wet dog at the notion of a kilo of cocaine strapped to his waistline.

No way, man–not even if it was a wedding gift from Keith Richards to Mick Jagger upon his 1971 marriage to Bianca.

The entire story of Weber’s parents was canonized in a 2009 book by ex-Rolling Stone editor, Robert Greenfield (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Robert_Greenfield), called A Day in the Life: One Family, the Beautiful People, and the End of the Sixties (http://www NULL.amazon NULL.com/Day-Life-Family-Beautiful-Sixties/dp/0306816229).

Still, I can see how today’s generation of young, eager-beaver parents would clap hand over mouth with a mortified “Ohhhh!” at the very notion of kids being raised up around pot, snort and rock music.

It brings home the difference between our parenting perspectives with post-rainstorm clarity.

To understand the late 60’s and the 70’s, you actually had to be there, in situ, with the times.

My then midlife father, who closely resembled Bill Bixby from The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/The_Courtship_of_Eddie%27s_Father) and was considered “hip” by all of our grade school classmates, once postured in front of the living room mirror sporting his first “fat” tie. Today, they’d substitute for a big cloth dinner napkin tucked in at the neck.

Guys wore beads and leather thongs around their necks and needn’t brush their hair for days. It was the short-lived advent of the “shag” (although not in Britain) hair cut—and I have to admit to being someone’s style experiment at the ripe age of 12. I still have photographic proof, although I’m not showing it to anyone without payment of a large sum of cash.

People didn’t expect conformity—in fact, they demanded the opposite.

Growing up in Ontario, Canada in the 1970’s I remember an intellectually avant garde Prime Minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Pierre_Trudeau). Ironically, he was also the unlikely, balding, sandal-wearing sex symbol who inspired “Trudeaumania” and enough collective female pheromones to compete with any rock star.

When he married Margaret (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Margaret_Trudeau)—a hot young filly 30 years his junior and once likened to a Canadian brand of Jackie Kennedy—the writing was on the wall.

When the Rolling Stones came to Toronto during the 1979 election, she hared off to the après concert parties with frightening flamboyance and openness, embracing debauchery in the Canadian press, and inking the pen for divorce.

It was political fodder for the times.

So, when Jake Weber—now 47 and a father himself—recalls rolling joints for the Rolling Stones when he was just a kid, it reminds me that I’m not alone in the modern eccentricity of my youth.
