Like every other parent around the civilized world—I’m pig-sick of lurking fearfully in school hallways, armed with a bottle of hand sanitizer, wondering if today is the day we’ll be hosting an unwanted, invisible guest coming home from school to play havoc with our health.

When I was growing up, the scary demons of childhood malaise were chicken pox, measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), scarlet fever, encephalitis, and later, the “kissing disease”—mononucleosis (http://pediatrics NULL.about NULL.com/od/childhoodinfections/a/0307_mono NULL.htm).

Parents who bore witness, still regaled us with ghoulish tales of polio, a crippling disease that claimed able-bodied liberty of countless children in the first half of the century, including WWII president Franklin Roosevelt (http://www NULL.u-s-history NULL.com/pages/h1578 NULL.html) whose legs were paralyzed with it, and who masked his disability in secrecy. The last recorded case of polio in the USA occurred in 1979.

In the 1960s and 70s, vaccines (http://www NULL.cdc NULL.gov/vaccines/pubs/vacc-timeline NULL.htm) were administered in schools and we lined up outside the infirmary or “sick room”, while needles—the kind that looked like they’d been pilfered from a vet’s bag and were normally used to tranquilize a race horse—were jammed artlessly into our upper arms, many leaving life-long circular scars up to the size of a penny.

In those days, controversy over vaccines was almost unheard of—perhaps because many of the parents of the day had seen first-hand the ravages of childhood disease and were unquestioning about the unadvertised content of the medicines injected into their children.

Believe it or not, according to the CDC, Swine Flu is an old arch-enemy and was the target of the largest public vaccination program implemented in 1979. The program was halted when 500 people who’d been vaccinated contracted Guillain-Barré syndrome (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Guillain%E2%80%93Barr%C3%A9_syndrome), and 25 of them subsequently died.

Now, and over the last year in the United States, as a piquant seasoning for a national atmosphere steaming with fear, cooked up by an economic stew of downturn-recession-depression, mass hysteria over Swine Flu has been re-introduced into the cultural mix.

And while the new vaccine is still controversial—with a fear of it probably enhanced by a collective unconscious recollection of the risky 1979 vaccine—we’re all freaked out by the idea that our children are walking around exposed.

Also in the 60s and 70s, Vitamin C was about the sum of the average American’s understanding of natural prevention of illness through strengthening the body’s immune system. Today, the array of immune system support available is mind-boggling in its magnitude.

And we don’t have a lot to lose by bolstering up ourselves and our children against the onslaught of the pig virus.

According to California-based Homeopath, Lorraine Stern (http://www NULL.centralcoasthomeopathy NULL.com/), “Many people, sadly, don’t know or trust homeopathy…but, so far the homeopathic remedy Aconite 30C has staved off flu in 11 out of 12 cases I have treated.”

Stern goes on to highlight that Aconite only works in the very first stages of the flu. Once flu takes hold, she recommends two other remedies that she has had success with: GI flus-Nux-v. And in the case where the flu sufferer is very tired and weak, the alternative treatment is Gelsemium which Stern says helps speed recovery.

The other key prevention tips are rest (first and foremost!), vitamins C and D, and whole foods. The monumental reputation of vitamin C stems from antioxidants which chase away the free radicals. Vitamin D’s role in the mix is that it breaks down the cell walls of bacteria. “A good reason to kick your kids outside for some sunshine” says Stern.

Dr Vernon Redd (http://www NULL.docredd NULL.com/), Chiropractor, Neurologist and Clinical Nutritionist advises that to “flu-proof” ourselves, it is vital that we don’t do the things that weaken our immune system.

His number one ‘bad guys’ are sugar and refined carbohydrates because they slow down immune activity by competing with vitamin C to get into the white blood cells, which Redd calls “the front line soldiers of the immune system”. The cells require vitamin C, “but if the sugar gets into the cell first, it slows down the white cell activity–and hence ability to attack disease causing organisms– to a crawl” says Redd.

His second line of prevention is minimizing free radical activity with antioxidants. “Viruses get into your cells by shooting a burst of free radicals that weaken the cell wall. Taking antioxidants will prevent this” he urges.

Like Lorraine Stern, he advises intake of vitamin D (5000 to 6000IU per day), try to get 10 hours of sleep a night and dress warmly for cold weather.

Dr Redd also recommends a line of whole food type nutritional supplements (which can also be taken by children) supplied by a firm called Standard Process (http://www NULL.standardprocess NULL.com/). This brand may only be purchased through a doctor and appropriate doses advised—for more info you can contact Dr Redd (http://www NULL.docredd NULL.com/) or call Standard Process at 1-800-848-5061 to find a local doctor.

Holstering up with double shooters of hand sanitizer just isn’t enough. It’s time to take preventative action and keep the pig from your door and the (nutritional) proof is in the swill.
